What are varicose veins?
Varicose veins are swollen, enlarged, and twisted veins that usually protrude from the skin’s surface, often appearing as blue or dark purple discolorations. Although many people search for treatments primarily to remove them because of their unsightly appearance, the accompanying symptoms of pain, discomfort, and inflammation are equally compelling reasons to seek treatment.
What happens when you have a venous disease?
Our bodies’ blood vessels are designed to supply blood to our vital organs; arteries carry oxygenated blood while veins pump unoxygenated blood back to the heart. While arteries harness our heart’s force to pump blood, veins use a one-way valve system to work against gravity. These valves prevent the blood from flowing back down the vein.
Venous Disease, also referred to as Chronic Venous Insufficiency or CVI, arises when this one-way valve system starts to fail, resulting in varicose veins. Instead of going back towards the heart, the blood begins to collect in the lower legs or feet, resulting in swelling of the vein. As time goes on, the vein becomes more prominent and conspicuous and often comes with varying degrees of pain and discomfort.
Varicose veins can manifest anywhere in the body, but the areas they are most commonly seen are the legs or feet, wherein the blood vessels need to work the most to be able to pump blood back to the heart.
The venous disease may be a harmless condition at first. However, if left untreated can lead to extremely painful side effects that may negatively impact your life. It does not matter if you have just noticed a few signs of varicose veins or have been dealing with them for a while; it is in your best interest to consult a Varicose Veins Doctor to identify the cause. Varicose veins may indicate an underlying condition that needs medical attention as soon as possible.
What are the causes of varicose veins?
Several factors lead to the development of varicose veins, including the following:
- Genetics
If you have a family history of venous disease, you have a higher chance of having the condition yourself.
- Age
Aging can cause the valves in your veins to weaken, decreasing their ability to regulate the blood flow in your legs and eventually cause blood to pool instead of going back to the heart.
- Gender
Women tend to be at higher risk for varicose veins because of the hormonal changes during perimenopause, pregnancy, and menopause. The female hormones involved in these events in a woman’s lifetime can weaken the veins’ walls and affect proper blood circulation.
- Obesity
Additional weight exerts more pressure on the veins in your legs, making it harder for them to pump blood back to the heart.
- Occupation
When work involves extended periods of standing or sitting, the veins are subjected to undue pressure that causes more significant blood pooling.
When you come to MS Vein for your in-person consultation, our board-certified vein specialists and cardiovascular surgeons will thoroughly examine your health history, present health status, and the condition of the affected veins to identify the cause and present the best treatment plan for you. To assure accuracy in every in-person examination we conduct, we also utilize ultrasound imaging.
What are the best treatments for varicose veins?
Advances in medicine and technology have given us minimally-invasive therapies, employ local anesthesia only, and can be done by a varicose veins doctor in the office on an outpatient scheme. These treatment options have also lead to higher success rates and longer-lasting results.
MS Vein offers the following treatment options for varicose veins:
1. Endovenous Ablation
This is a non-surgical, one-hour procedure that gets rid of varicose veins by using thermal laser energy. It is relatively painless and needs minimal downtime. Local anesthesia is administered around the veins to ensure maximum comfort during the procedure. We use ultrasound guidance for precision as we insert a small catheter through a needle into the vein. Then a thin laser fiber is inserted through the catheter to emit thermal energy to the vein walls.
The thermal energy will cause the inner lining of the affected vein to collapse and seal off. The body will naturally and automatically redirect the blood flow to the other healthy veins in the legs.
2. Sclerotherapy
This treatment involves injecting a chemical agent called sclerosant into the vein, which irritates the vein, instantly causing it to close up. The body then absorbs the closed-up vein naturally. It has few side effects, less downtime, and can be done in-office, making sclerotherapy the treatment of choice for surface or smaller varicose veins.
3. Microphlebectomy
This is a minor procedure wherein the varicose veins are surgically removed. Local anesthesia is always administered to ensure that you are comfortable. Small freckle-sized holes are then made over the vein through which they will be extracted. Post-surgical care requires you to wear compression stockings for at least two weeks to achieve the best results. It has a high rate of success and efficacy because the varicose vein is removed completely.
